Revitalisation of the Sydney and Melbourne buildings

November 1, 2023

Delivering a three-year engagement program to involve 102 building owners and over 250 tenants in plans to revitalise these heritage-listed Canberra landmarks.

The Sydney and Melbourne buildings have a unique and complex ownership structure with 102 separate titles. The historic character of the buildings is valued by Canberrans and the buildings are familiar gateways into the city centre.

Communication Link led a sensitive and considered stakeholder engagement program over three years to ensure the 102 building owners and over 250 tenants were involved from the earliest stages in developing a revitalisation plan for the buildings.

We applied our longstanding expertise in stakeholder engagement to deliver a multi-faceted program, managing a range of conflicting views, priorities and sensitivities among the large group of stakeholders. This included complexities associated with the development of a Conservation Management Plan and deliberations around refurbishment priorities, costs and coordination.

Early and continued engagement, brought stakeholders along on the journey and allowed all voices to be heard and respected. Our genuine, two-way, timely and inclusive engagements led to broad support among stakeholders for the revitalisation initiatives and the development of a shared vision for the buildings, leading to invigorated public spaces of value to Canberrans.

We continue to work with the City Renewal Authority delivering ongoing engagement with Sydney and Melbourne building stakeholders as new paving and façade restoration gets underway.
